“I learnt to serve and give my best in Boys’ Brigade Penang”

Rev Dr Chuah Chia Choon

I was born in the beautiful island of Penang, where people go for the best hawker foods and heritage tours. My family is a Taoist-background family, which spurred me to find the true meaning and purpose of life, because all around me, I saw people living their lives aimlessly – only eating, sleeping and working.

During my secondary school years, I joined the Boys’ Brigade. I remember being in a big event where I raised my hand to confess that I wanted to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Immediately I was filled with joy, although I did not know what it meant during that time. I had found my purpose in life – to serve and to love God. That was the place I started to learn about serving, to be excellent and strive to give our best in service.

I had found my purpose in life – to serve and to love God

After believing in the Lord, I prayed for a clear direction in life. One Sunday morning, I was sitting at the church pew getting myself ready for worship service. I saw a card with a Bible passage from Romans 12:1-2, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice…”

As I continued to pray and reflect on this passage, I was moved and convicted to serve the Lord in the prime of my life, that is from a young age. The phrase “living sacrifice” reminded me of the Old Testament sacrifices of bringing our best gift as an offering.

Today, I am in my 14th year of serving the Lord. The challenges will always be there. However, I go all out for Jesus, trusting Him to work things out beautifully!
