Bringing Light to the Longhouses of Sarikei

I became a pastor at the age of 27, after accepting the Lord in my first year of university. After receiving His grace and experiencing a transformed life, I was eager to bring His presence into people’s lives and today, I’ve been a pastor for over 30 years.

As a Chinese pastor in Sarawak, I’m passionate about reaching out to both Chinese and indigenous groups in my home state. In 2022, our team pioneered a Bahasa Malaysia indigenous ministry in Sarikei, ministering to over 20 longhouses.

Then in 2024, the Methodist Church of Sarawak posted me to Nyelong Park Methodist in Sarikei, which has an outreach point in Selidap called Su En Learning Centre. This learning centre reaches out to the Iban with Saturday church services, weekly Sunday schools, and youth fellowship. About 30 children and adults have since been baptised, and are worshipping God regularly at the learning centre.

Besides that, we also took over the care of 14 longhouses in Sare, Sarikei from local Methodist missionaries. We continue the work of introducing Jesus Christ using Iban-language videos and conducting monthly worship services in Bahasa Malaysia. The average attendance per longhouse is about five people. There is even one with only one person, who is the Tuai Rumah, who shows up faithfully during the monthly worship.

This may sound like a mission report, but I’m here to testify of God’s goodness if we continue to do His work tirelessly. Over the years, I’ve seen with my own eyes how receptive people are to the gospel. With time, I believe that whole communities will come to accept Christ, experiencing His presence and receiving His grace like I once did.

I’m here to testify of God’s goodness if we continue to do His work tirelessly

Praise the Lord for more new longhouses to reach, this time in Muara Payang, a 30-minute boat ride from Sarikei town. We’ve visited them twice so far, with the latest one showing an Iban-language film about Jesus to four longhouses. We’re welcomed back again for short-term missions and I pray that our outreaches will bear fruit in God’s timing
