Founding Pastor, SIBKL

When I was a postgraduate medical student in Edinburgh, a Scottish couple would invite me to their house every Sunday after church for lunch. Through them, my then-girlfriend and now wife and I got to know many people in church, as they would invite other members and the Senior Pastor and his family too.
Before long, we felt at home within the church family and were well-integrated. As foreign students, we felt so welcomed and so cared for. We even held our wedding reception in their rose garden. That dear couple’s love and kindness left such a huge impact on our lives.
When we eventually came back to work as doctors in Sabah, we decided to follow their example. We opened our home in Kota Kinabalu and hosted friends, visitors and even Borneo Evangelical Mission (BEM) missionaries. The latter blessed us so much with their priceless life lessons that we were more blessed than them!
Jesus once said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). When we give and bless others, we mirror the heart of God because God delights to bless us. It is His nature to be generous, and it would certainly please Him when we are kind to others.
Can I encourage us to not be weary in doing good? Because in due time we will reap our rewards (Galatians 6:9). One of my favourite verses, Hebrews 6:10 says, “God is not unjust; He will not forget your work and the love you have shown Him as you have helped His people and continue to help them.” Truly, God is no man’s debtor.
